Some areas in the Chinese capital, Beijing, have been locked down for fear of a new outbreak of the coronavirus. The move comes on the heels of reports of six people being infected with the coronavirus.
A local outbreak is feared in Beijing, the news agency AFP reported.
A press briefing on Thursday quoted city officials in Beijing as saying that people in 11 residential areas in Beijing's Fengtai district had been told not to leave their homes. Most of those newly infected with corona have links to a local meat market with illness.
Officials say this is the first case of Kovid-19 in Beijing in the past two months. Many of the infected people visited the local Sinfadi meat market last week. No one from outside has come or gone inside Beijing.
China's internal outbreak was largely brought under control through a severe widespread lockdown after the first disease was detected in Wuhan last year. That drastic lockdown has been greatly eased as the rate of infection has decreased.
Most of the infected patients that have been identified in recent times are immigrants. Of the six newly infected, three were workers at the Sinfadi meat market, one was a market traveler and the other two were workers at the China Meat Research Center, seven kilometers away. An employee also went to the market last week. Authorities closed the market. In addition, the seafood market that an infected person went to nearby has also been shut down.
Hundreds of police officers and paramilitary troops have been deployed in the two markets. Nearby schools and kindergartens have been closed. The chairman of Sinfadi Market told Beijing News that the virus had spread fears about Beijing's food supply system after it was found on an imported salmon chopping board.
The Beijing Market Surveillance Authority is launching monitoring of fresh and frozen meat, poultry and fish markets, warehouses and cutting services to investigate food security issues across the city. Overnight the big supermarket chains have removed their salmon from the capital. Many restaurants have stopped serving salmon. Authorities have announced a quick test of all those who have come in contact with the victims in the Sinfadi market. In addition, market workers are being tested.
