Julian Assange and Chelsea Manning
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and former United States Army Chelsea Manning have been tortured by the United States and the United Kingdom, a top UN official has said. They are now imprisoned after millions of US secret documents were leaked to the country.
The United Nations Special Envoy for Torture, Nils Melzer, said, "Manning, who was in prison for not agreeing to testify on Assange, has taken all the abusive measures that meet all the elements of torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment." Manning is in a US state prison in Virginia.
Regarding the UK's treatment of Assange in London's Belmarsh Jail, Nils Melzer said that in the light of the current situation, the intense emotional pain that Assange continues to show in the light of the current situation makes it clear that he has been subjected to psychological abuse or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. And Assange's supporters say his health is deteriorating.
In separate letters, Nils Melzer condemned the US and UK government's actions regarding the two detainees. But after receiving no response from the two countries, he has now published the contents of the letter.
The UN official said on Assange, "The information I have received from medical experts supported in my formal inquiry is unquestionably a reason to believe that British officials have played a role in assaulting or abusing Assange." Depending on the dependents.
